Red & Crimson Hardy Waterlilies

These red/crimson coloured waterlilies are suitable for medium to larger ponds or even farm dams. They require a much larger water surface area for their leaf spread, hence, coverage is more when compared with small/miniature size waterlilies. Growth tip of the plant could be submerged between 20cms to 40cms below the water surface. Any deeper than 40cms the plant may not flower or grow properly.

Nymphaea 'Almost Black' (Hardy Waterlily)
(Slocum, 1993) Very beautiful and unusual black cherry soda coloured flowers with up to 40 petals on each flower. The flower colour intensifies as the plant establishes after planting. Reddish bronze leaves maturing to green with age. A medium to large grower. An import from Perry's Water Gardens (USA). Rare.

Nymphaea 'Atropurpurea' (Hardy Waterlily)
(Latour-Marliac, 1901) Attractive dark crimson-red starry flowers. The new leaves are dark purple fading to deep green. An interesting old French variety that is not often available commercially. Not an easy cultivar to propagate. Very few only. Quite Rare.

(Latour-Marliac, 1931) Beautiful red flowers tipped with white on outer petals. Large waxy textured oval to round green leaves. Very free flowering. A reliable lily that can have up to 4 or 5 buds at the same time on an established plant. Suitable for large ponds and dams. Rare.

(Latour-Marliac, 1910) Huge flowers with beautiful inner petals crimson red blending to pink and white towards the outer petals. Large green leaves. An exceptional cultivar that is free blooming. A fairly large growing waterlily that is suitable for large ponds or dam plantings. Limited supply.

Nymphaea 'Escarboucle' (Hardy Waterlily)
(Latour-Marliac, 1909) Beautiful bright vermilion red flowers opening cup shaped and becoming stellate shaped with age. A large grower with large round green leaves. Excellent for the large pond or dam. This is the true plant. Unfortunately, there is a similar looking waterlily that is sold under this name in Australia. Rare. Very limited numbers only.

Nymphaea 'Gloriosa' (Hardy Waterlily)
(Latour-Marliac, 1896) A fantastic waterlily variety with eye-catching semi-double crimson-red flowers with outer petals tipped white. This is the true form with distinctive flowers that has a set of 5 sepals compared to usual 4 sepals in most other waterlily varieties. Lovely dark green leaves with scattered splashes of purplish-brown. Adaptable to smaller ponds or tubs. A very reliable bloomer. Highly recommended.
